After School Science or Math Teacher

Art Resource Collaborative for Kids is looking for an enthusiastic and skilled individual to facilitate and help develop our after school STEAM program.

This original program focuses on Science and Math in conjunction with Visual Art. The goal of this program will be to explore and develop skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math while also using lessons to explore and develop skills around intercultural exchanges, civic engagement, social justice and leadership roles.

Qualified candidates should have experience in STEAM, technology, classroom facilitation and/or arts integration. An interest in curriculum development is a plus. Applicants should be ready to collaborate with other teachers in the classroom, specifically an Education Intern and ARCK’s Program Coordinator. Prospective educators should have some level of facilitation experience and comfort with working with students Grades 3-5.

Teaching Artist Position

The Art Resource Collaborative for Kids (ARCK) is looking for part-time Teaching Artists to teach ARCK’s art integration. Our Teaching Artists design projects based on our existing framework while still able to challenge their students creatively. ARCK’s goal is to have students participate in projects that explore visual art, written and visual literacy while incorporating intercultural diversity and create connections with their school’s academic subjects. ARCK is committed to establishing compassion, respect, and building positive character.

Classes run in three, 12-week blocks throughout the Boston Public Schools (BPS) year at locations in Jamaica Plain and Allston. We are also accepting applications for our rolling database for future positions.

Qualifications: Must have a degree in Fine Art or Arts Education. BFA or an MA in Arts Education. Must have knowledge of a wide variety of materials and command of basic art history/contemporary art. Familiarity with STEAM is a plus. Bilingual is a plus. Teaching artists must commit to take professional development proposed by ARCK. Must collaborate with classroom teachers and ARCK’s coordinator to create lessons in the arts based on student’s school subjects and diversity projects. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Google Documents.

How To Apply: ARCK accepts applications on a rolling basis. All materials are reviewed upon receipt and kept on file for at least one year. Teaching artists being considered for the roster are observed and evaluated by ARCK program staff.

ARCK’s Teaching Philosophy:

ARCK’s visual art teaching philosophy utilizes a “Whole Child” approach with respect to kinesthetic and cognitive skills and social and emotional growth. We work to incorporate students’ diverse cultural backgrounds, values, and experiences into visual arts projects that explore art from different cultures. Projects are a unique opportunity for students to express themselves, see their ideas grow, take pride in finished works of art, and become agents of change. Students are encouraged to be thoughtful about their work and take reflective time to assess the success and failures of each work as well as make academic connections.

ARCK accepts applications on a rolling basis. Teaching Artist positions are part-time depending on the partner school. All materials are reviewed upon receipt and kept on file for at least one year.  Artists being considered for the roster are observed by teaching a sample lesson to ARCK’s staff.

ARCK’s Curricular Framework Philosophy:

ARCK’s visual art curricular framework utilizes a “Whole Child” approach, with respect to kinesthetic and cognitive skills, that incorporates students diversity, values, academics into its lessons in art making and art history to ensure the effective development of students as future productive members of the community. Teachers provide examples from the art history canon and the multicultural contemporary art world.The program works from the premise that critical thinking and self-reflection are an essential process of social and emotional growth and that art provides a unique opportunity for students to see their ideas grow, and take pride in the finished products. Students’ interests and concerns determine the focus of their projects. They are thoughtful in their creation of each piece of art and they take reflective time to assess the success and failures of each work as well as make connections from the artwork to life outside of the classroom.

ARCK accepts applications on a rolling basis. All materials are reviewed upon receipt and kept on file for at least one year. Artists being considered for the roster are observed and evaluated by ARCK program staff.

If you are a professional artist interested in teaching for ARCK, have substantial experience teaching children in public school settings, and have a teaching philosophy aligned with our Curricular Framework Philosophy, please submit the documents described below:

  • A cover letter explaining your approach to teaching your art form and/or the philosophy that informs your work.
  • A one page outline of a ten-session residency with any age group K-8.
  • A résumé that demonstrates your experience as an artist and/or as a teaching artist. You may also include lesson plans.
